What should I do if my child has hypothyroidism?

Nowadays, hypothyroidism does not only occur in adults, some children may also suffer from hypothyroidism, so parents must understand the early symptoms of hypothyroidism in their children. If the child has these symptoms, they must go for examination and diagnosis in time. Many parents worry about what to do if their children suffer from hypothyroidism. In fact, if the treatment is timely, it will not affect the children.

1. Early identification is very important

1) If the mother suffers from hypothyroidism or has hypothyroidism during pregnancy, it will affect the baby's thyroid development and dysfunction. The baby's thyroid function needs to be checked 3 days after birth to detect thyroid dysfunction in time.

2) Recognize the symptoms of hypothyroidism in babies at an early stage: eating less milk, difficulty in feeding, inactivity, unwillingness to move, easy to sleep, early onset of jaundice on the child's skin, dark color, and long-term persistence (normal physiological jaundice disappears in about 2 weeks). The baby's bloating is also a very important manifestation. The baby's abdomen becomes larger and bulges like a small ball. The baby is also constipated and does not defecate for several days. Sometimes the baby's meconium excretion is also delayed. Babies with severe hypothyroidism will appear swollen and fat all over, have slow reactions, and have a large tongue that often sticks out of the mouth.

3) Pay attention to the results of the baby's foot blood screening after birth, and make timely phone inquiries or check online.

2. Early treatment can improve the baby's intellectual and physical development.

1) Once a baby suffers from hypothyroidism, he must go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible. Early treatment can make the baby's physical and intellectual development close to that of a normal baby. If treatment is started within 1-3 months after birth, the prognosis is better and intelligence can mostly return to normal; if the diagnosis is not made early and treatment is started after 6 months, although thyroid hormone treatment can improve growth, intelligence will still be severely impaired.

2) A normal baby's body will secrete thyroid hormones on its own to ensure the baby's normal development. However, a baby with hypothyroidism cannot secrete or secretes insufficient thyroid hormones and needs external thyroid hormone supplementation. External thyroid hormone is also called Euthyrox, which is the same as the thyroid hormone secreted in our body. As long as the dosage is appropriate and the thyroid function is normal, it will not cause adverse reactions.

3) Euthyrox is mainly given orally once a day. It is very convenient, but it must be taken for a long time and cannot be stopped on your own. Many mothers of babies do not understand the characteristics of this disease. After taking the medicine and seeing that their babies are normal, they stop taking the medicine on their own, causing their babies to be disabled for life and regretting it for the rest of their lives.
