Many parents have found that their children have some small bumps on their heads. After going to the hospital for a check-up, it was discovered that these small lumps were lymph nodes. Many people believe that lymph nodes can only be found on the neck and not on the head. However, many parents will find a lump behind their baby's head, which is a lymph node. So why do babies have lymph nodes on their heads?

When pathogens such as bacteria and viruses (enemy forces) invade, the lymphocytes in the lymph nodes (our forces) can directly eliminate them. In addition, the swelling and proliferation of the body's lymph nodes is equivalent to increasing our "defense base" or "military station", thereby enhancing combat effectiveness. These lymph nodes are usually very small and soft, and you can't even feel them. They can only be felt when they are infected and swollen and located in superficial parts of the body. For example: in front of the ears, behind the ears, neck, back of the head, chin, the small depression above the collarbone, armpits, groin, etc. Some other lymph nodes are located deep inside the human body, such as the common mesenteric lymph nodes. These deep lymph nodes are difficult to feel when they are swollen and are usually discovered through B-ultrasound examinations.

Children are prone to upper respiratory tract infections. If the infections are repeated, the cervical lymph nodes that control this area will proliferate and swell. Similarly, if there is an infection in other parts of the body, the lymph nodes in the corresponding nearby parts will also swell.

Generally speaking, after each infection is cured, the lymph nodes will gradually shrink to their normal size. However, if a child is infected repeatedly, some of the repeatedly enlarged lymph nodes will proliferate. This proliferative process will continue until puberty. After puberty, the lymph nodes will slowly shrink and become smaller, and gradually they cannot be felt. Therefore, adults rarely feel the lymph nodes.

If parents feel lymph nodes in these parts of their children, don't be nervous. Most of the time, this is a normal phenomenon, a remnant of previous repeated infections. It will disappear during puberty, so don't worry about it.

Normally proliferating lymph nodes are mostly the size of soybeans or peanuts, with a smooth surface, flexible texture, and the ability to slide. They are painless to the touch and the child will not have any other discomfort. No medication or treatment is required.

Although the following situations rarely occur, you still need to be vigilant. If the swollen lymph nodes are not smooth, are very hard, are fixed in position and do not slide, feel stuck together, are abnormally swollen and do not subside, or suddenly increase in size and become red and swollen, then you need to go to the hospital for detailed examination and treatment.
