My two-year-old baby often complains of leg pain. What's going on?

Many children experience leg pain while playing or resting. This situation is often ignored by parents and teachers because most infants do not suffer leg pain due to trauma. In particular, the main causes of leg pain in two-year-old babies are physiological and pathological. Parents must find the cause before they can treat it. So why do two-year-old babies often complain of leg pain?

First, why does a two-year-old baby often complain of leg pain? Trauma. Childhood is a period when accidental injuries are very likely to occur, because children at this stage are particularly active but have poor self-protection abilities, so bumps and bruises are inevitable while playing. Sometimes they may accidentally injure the knee and hip ligaments, or break bones from falling. If the leg pain is caused by trauma, we can often see bruising, swelling, tenderness, etc. in the painful area. In the case of fractures, there will also be symptoms of joint movement disorders. X-ray examinations can help with diagnosis.

Second, abnormal bone development. Some babies have skeletal and joint structure dysplasia such as clubfoot, hallux valgus, and inversion. When they learn to stand and walk, the joints and ligaments of the lower limbs are subjected to unbalanced force and the muscles remain tense during long-term activities and weight-bearing, which may cause leg pain over time.

Third, growing pains. After excluding factors such as trauma and disease, many leg pains in children are also related to "growing pains". Growing pains refer to the traction caused by the rapid growth of long bones and the unbalanced growth and development of local muscles and tendons during the growth and development stage of children. They usually occur around the knee joint or the front of the calf, and occasionally in the groin area. However, during examination, there is often no history of trauma in these areas, and limb movements are normal. When "growing pains" occur, the pain mostly occurs during rest or before going to bed at night, while during normal activities or play, the pain is often not felt due to distraction.

Why does my two-year-old baby often complain about leg pain? Parents don’t need to be too nervous about this kind of leg pain caused by "growing pains". It is only a temporary pain in childhood and a normal physiological phenomenon. In order to reduce the occurrence of this growing pain, you should pay attention to the child’s nutritional balance and properly supplement the calcium, protein, vitamins and other nutrients needed for the baby’s growth and development. Be careful to avoid too much activity during the day. If the calf pain is severe before going to bed at night, you can apply a hot towel or gently massage it.
