Coughing is divided into many types, including hot cough and cold cough. There is a certain difference between cold cough and hot cough in children. Cold cough is caused by the invasion of cold air from the outside, and white sputum will easily appear, while hot cough is caused by getting angry in the body, and the sputum will be yellower.

What is the difference between a cold cough and a hot cough in children?

1. Cause

Cold cough: caused by the invasion of wind and cold, which causes the lung qi to fail to descend and rise, and is more common in winter and spring.

Heat cough: Wind-heat invades the lungs, turns into heat inside, burns body fluids, and causes the lungs to lose their ability to clear and purify themselves. It is more common in summer and autumn.

2. Performance

Cold cough: The sputum is thin, white and foamy, with headache, nasal congestion, clear runny nose, or accompanied by fear of cold, chills, no sweating, pale red tongue, thin white fur, and a floating and tight pulse.

Hot cough: The phlegm is yellow and thick, not easy to cough up, the throat is dry and painful, and there is thirst, often accompanied by fever, headache, dizziness, red tongue, thin yellow tongue coating, and floating or rapid pulse.

3. Diet therapy

Cold cough: 3 slices of ginger, 30 grams of rice. Wash and chop the ginger, and cook it with rice into porridge. Take 1 to 2 doses daily for 3 to 5 days. It can warm the spleen and stomach, dispel wind and cold, and benefit the lungs.

Hot cough: 5 grams of Fritillaria, 30 grams of rice, and appropriate amount of white sugar. Select the Fritillaria, put it in a pot, add appropriate amount of water, soak for 5-10 minutes, decoct in water to extract the juice, add rice to cook porridge, add sugar when it is cooked, boil it for one or two more times before eating, or grind the Fritillaria into powder, take 1 gram of the powder each time, add it to the porridge and take 1-2 doses a day for 3-5 consecutive days. It can resolve phlegm, relieve cough, clear away heat and invigorate the lungs.

Treatment and care of cold cough and hot cough in children

Cold cough: It should be treated by dispersing wind and cold, promoting lung function and relieving cough. You can choose to add or subtract ingredients from Sanao Decoction. Take 3 grams each of ephedra and licorice, 5 grams each of apricot kernel, schizonepeta, peucedanum, platycodon, perilla seed, fennel, tangerine peel, cinnamon twig, stemona, and scutellaria. Decoction in water, 1 dose per day.

Chinese patent medicines include Xingsu cough syrup, Xiaoqinglong oral liquid, etc.

Care: Keep the air in the room fresh, with appropriate temperature and humidity, and open windows regularly for ventilation. Pay attention to air disinfection, prohibit smoking indoors, and prevent the irritation of smoke and special odors. Pay attention to weather changes and add or remove clothes in time as the climate changes. When in an air-conditioned room, be sure to add more clothes to prevent catching cold and aggravating your cough. Don't drink beverages, especially in the summer.

Heat cough: The treatment should be to dispel wind and heat, promote lung function and relieve cough. You can choose Ma Xing Shi Gan Decoction with modifications. Take 3 grams each of ephedra and licorice, 10 grams of gypsum, 5 grams each of mulberry leaves, chrysanthemum, almond, peucedanum, forsythia, dalis chinensis, fritillaria, platycodon, and bamboo shavings. Decoction in water, 1 dose per day.
