Newborn baby has a lump in the breast? Teach you how to deal with it

Since newborns cannot communicate well, parents will be very worried when they show symptoms, especially when lumps appear in the breasts. Parents should understand the cause and remember not to squeeze them with their hands to avoid infection. At the same time, they need to seek medical treatment in time to help the baby recover as soon as possible. Therefore, it is very necessary to understand some medical knowledge so that you can easily deal with these problems.

1. Newborns have lumps in their breasts

Some newborns, regardless of gender, will experience temporary swelling of both or one side of the breast 3-5 days after birth, which may be the size of a broad bean or apricot kernel. Sometimes a small amount of milky yellowish liquid can be seen flowing out. These phenomena often confuse and disturb many new parents. In fact, it is normal for newborns to have breast lumps and lactation, and parents don't need to worry.

2. Reasons

This phenomenon is mainly due to the continuous influence of the mother's estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, etc. on the fetus in the mother's body. It usually disappears naturally after 2-3 weeks after birth, and rarely lasts for more than a month. This is a unique physiological phenomenon in newborns. Doctors call it breast swelling and no special treatment is required.

3. Countermeasures: If parents see lumps in the newborn's breasts or milk secretion, they don't need to be nervous. Remember to squeeze the breasts with your hands to avoid bacterial infection. The skin of a newborn is very tender, its immune function is low, and its resistance to bacteria is weak. Once the skin is damaged during squeezing, bacteria will take advantage of the opportunity and enter the mammary ducts through the broken skin, especially Staphylococcus aureus infection, which can cause neonatal mastitis and even sepsis in severe cases. If a newborn has lumps in the breast, milk secretion is accompanied by redness and swelling of the breast skin, and the child cries when touched, mastitis should be considered and the baby should go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time. As for whether or not nipples will be inverted as the baby grows up, this is related to the development of the breasts during infancy and later, and whether breast care is done well during pregnancy, but has no direct relationship with whether the breasts are well cared for during the neonatal period.
