Are there any sequelae for premature babies?

The most obvious feature of premature babies is that their brains have not yet fully developed. Compared with normal children, their immunity is very low and they are more vulnerable to threats from viruses and bacteria. Many expectant mothers do not have much experience in taking care of children and are always worried that their children will have some sequelae, which will have a certain impact on their future development and mental health. Let us now find out whether premature babies have sequelae?

1. Clinical manifestations include cyanosis, apnea, drowsiness, convulsions, screaming, muscle weakness and abnormal eye movements.

2. This disease mainly occurs in newborns and newborns delivered by cesarean section. The lower the maturity, the higher the incidence of this disease.

3. It is related to hypoproteinemia, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, infection, etc., especially due to the lack of glucuronyl convertase in the liver, which leads to the poor function of forming excretable conjugated bilirubin.

4. About 7% of premature infants develop intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), while the incidence rate reaches 50%.

5. Anemia is often present. Due to insufficient iron storage in premature infants, serum iron levels drop sharply after one month after birth. Development is too fast, requiring increased blood volume, but the hematopoietic function is poor and cannot keep up with the rate of weight gain.

6. Less storage of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D. The ability to absorb fat and fat-soluble vitamins is poor. Due to rapid growth

For premature infants, the normal supply of calcium and phosphorus often cannot meet their needs.

7. Premature infants are susceptible to scleredema due to poor temperature regulation, relatively large body surface area, thin skin, abundant blood vessels, easy heat dissipation, and small amount of brown fat.

8. Inhaling high concentrations of oxygen can cause the arterial oxygen tension to rise above 13.3 kPa (10 mmHg), causing spasms in the retinal blood vessels, leading to retinal ischemia and damage, causing fibrous tissue proliferation and blindness. When oxygen must be used for premature infants, attention should be paid to the appropriate oxygen concentration and duration of oxygen use.

The above is an explanation of whether premature babies have sequelae. In many cases, sequelae are completely avoidable, so there is no need for mothers to be too nervous. As long as it is handled properly, the possibility of suffering from sequelae is very small. Observe the baby's physical reactions and make sure to keep up with nutrition. Carefully create a good development environment for your baby, which is the basis for your baby's physical development.
