Causes of high thyroid hormone levels in newborns

The birth of every newborn brings a great surprise to a family, but with the arrival of menstruation, many young parents will find themselves at a loss when it comes to some diseases in their children's bodies when taking care of them. For example, during the examination process, they find out that the newborn's thyroid hormone is high.

Normal newborns may have a transient increase in TSH due to changes in the living environment. Distress may also affect TSH, but if it is still high 20 days after birth, it can be treated, whether temporary or permanent, with medication, because hypothyroidism can affect growth and development, as well as intelligence. While taking the medication, thyroid function should be checked regularly and the medication dosage should be adjusted based on the test results.

In the early stage of neonatal development, the thyroid function is unstable and physiological TSH elevation may occur. It usually returns to normal in about 20 days. Your child's elevated level is not serious and should be a physiological elevation. Pay attention and wait until the child is one month old before testing again.

It is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. In short, the thyroid function of the human body is controlled by the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis. The hypothalamus is the highest level, secreting thyrotropin-releasing hormone.
