What tests should be done to determine the fetal position?

Although doctors can determine the baby's specific fetal position based on their years of experience, the baby will move around mischievously in the mother's womb, sometimes beyond their experience. At this time, you need the help of instruments to determine the fetal position. What I want to teach expectant mothers today is what tests are needed to determine the fetal position during pregnancy checkups, so that expectant mothers will not be nervous during the checkups. These inspections are proposed for safety issues during production. So what tests should be done to determine the fetal position?

1. B-ultrasound

This is the most direct and effective method. Under B-ultrasound detection, we can clearly see the position and posture of the fetus in the uterus.

2. Four-step palpation method

This is the most commonly used examination method. Pregnant women can use this method after 24 weeks of pregnancy to determine whether the size and position of the fetus and the size of the uterus are consistent with the pregnancy period. In addition, it can also determine whether the presenting part is normal and estimate the amount of amniotic fluid.

(1) Body position of pregnant women: When using the four-part palpation method to detect the fetal position, the body position of the pregnant woman is very important. First, she should empty her bladder, then lie down in a supine position with her head higher than her feet, her legs spread apart and bent, and her abdomen exposed and relaxed.

(2) Examiner: The position where the examiner stands is very important, and the examination is usually performed on the right side of the pregnant woman.

(3) Techniques:

Step 1: First, the examiner touches the fundus of the uterus with his hands to measure its height to determine whether the fetus is in line with the growth size during pregnancy, and then uses the fingertips of both hands to push gently alternately to determine the fetal position. To the touch, the fetal head is hard, round, and spherical, while the fetal buttocks are wide, soft, and irregular in shape.

Step 2: The examiner places both hands on both sides of the pregnant woman's abdomen, with one hand fixing the abdomen and the other hand examining the abdomen. The hands can be crossed to examine from top to bottom. First, the fetus's spine and limbs need to be identified. The fetal spine is flat and full, while the fetal limbs are uneven. The direction of the fetal back in the mother's body can be determined based on the spine. In addition, the examiner can also feel the movement of the fetus's limbs.

Step 3: The examiner extends his right hand, separates the thumb and four fingers, checks the presenting part of the fetus, distinguishes the fetal head and buttocks, and then moves left and right to determine the connection. If the fetal presenting part can move in the left and right direction, it means that it is not connected to the pelvis; otherwise, it is connected to the pelvis.
