Causes of frequent parotid gland swelling in children

Causes of frequent parotid gland swelling in children

Mumps is mainly an inflammation of the parotid gland caused by viral infection, and mumps is a systemic viral inflammation, so after mumps occurs, everyone must seek timely treatment to avoid other complications caused by mumps. The chance of mumps occurring in children is much greater than that in adults, but some parents find that their children's mumps is recurring. So what is the reason for repeated swelling of children's mumps?

It could be recurrent mumps in children.

1. Recurrent mumps in children occurs before puberty and is characterized by repeated swelling in the parotid area.

2. Etiology and pathology The etiology of recurrent parotitis in children is still unclear. Many scholars have proposed various etiology theories, which are generally believed to be related to the following factors:

(1) Congenital developmental abnormalities

(2) Abnormal autoimmune function. Children often have a history of allergic reactions, which occur simultaneously with parotid swelling. Some patients have abnormal immunological indicators. The immune system of children is immature and their immune function is low, making them prone to retrograde infection. Children with this disease will recover once their immune systems mature.

(3) Viral infection mumps may be the cause. Some children have a history of mumps before the onset of the disease, and the mumps virus antibody titer increases during the acute stage of the disease.

(4) Other factors Some scholars believe that the disease is caused by repeated retrograde bacterial infection.

Treatment

Recurrent mumps in children is a disease that tends to heal itself, and most attacks stop after puberty, so conservative treatment is recommended. The principle is to enhance resistance, prevent secondary infection and reduce the incidence of diseases.

1. Maintain oral hygiene and rinse your mouth with gargle during an attack.

2. Massage the gland daily to promote saliva secretion. Local physical therapy can also be performed.

3. Acute phase

Antibiotics can be given systemically and the parotid duct can be flushed with antibiotic solution to control inflammation as soon as possible.

4. Appropriate administration of immunomodulators, such as levofloxacin, 12.5-25 mg per day, 3 days a week for 2 weeks, can regulate the immune function of children. Thymopentin treatment during the intermission period

5. Catheter infusion therapy

The use of 40% iodized oil parotid duct perfusion on the affected side during the intermittent period to treat recurrent mumps in children has achieved good therapeutic effects and has been clinically proven to be a good treatment method. Because iodized oil has the function of dilating the catheter system and has a strong bactericidal effect, and it is a highly viscous liquid with poor fluidity and is insoluble in water, after being injected into the catheter, it is not absorbed and is excreted slowly. It can stay in the catheter for a long time and gradually decompose, slowly releasing iodine ions to achieve a continuous bactericidal effect. Catheter perfusion therapy can achieve the best mechanical flushing and effective antibacterial effect with the maximum drug concentration in the parotid area, and is an effective method for treating recurrent mumps in children.

6. According to traditional Chinese medicine, recurrent mumps in children is caused by exogenous wind-heat evil toxins, which block the Shaoyang meridians, become stagnant and do not dissipate, and accumulate in the parotid area. The chronic stage is caused by deficiency of vital energy, lingering of evil toxins, physical weakness, and weak defenses, which lead to the invasion of external evils. The Codonopsis pilosula in Shengmai Drink has the effects of invigorating Qi and dispelling wind, nourishing the essence, strengthening the spleen and eliminating dampness, strengthening the body and eliminating evil, nourishing yin and promoting body fluid; the Astragalus has the effect of expelling toxins and discharging pus. Shengmai Yin and Huangqi Liquid can be taken orally to treat recurrent mumps in children. Some people choose Yupingfeng Powder (raw astragalus, selfheal, white atractylodes, schizonepeta, siler, bombyx batryticatus, turmeric, red peony root, fritillaria, pseudostellaria, platycodon, and raw licorice). Take 1 dose per day, decocted in water, 20 days as a course of treatment, and apply Chinese medicine Hibiscus ointment externally to achieve better results. Prognosis evaluation: Recurrent mumps in children tends to heal on its own and usually stops after puberty. However, some patients suffer from chronic mumps and develop recurrent parotitis in adults.
