6 year old child wetting the bed

It is very common for babies aged one or two to wet the bed. Parents can understand and tolerate it. However, if a baby wets the bed at the age of 6, parents will feel particularly sad because they think the child is doing it on purpose. In fact, a 6-year-old child does not wet the bed on purpose. It is very likely a disease caused by psychological or physiological problems. Parents need to pay more attention and understand it clearly.

Six-year-old child wets the bed

1. Is bedwetting a disease in children?

Generally speaking, most children can basically control urination by the age of 3, and rarely wet the bed after the age of 5. If a child over 5 years old still wets the bed and wets the bed more than twice a month, he or she can be diagnosed with a disease called "enuresis". According to a survey, the incidence of enuresis in children at the age of 5 is about 15%, and at the age of 10 it is 5% to 6%.

Many parents believe that bedwetting is normal for children and that it will get better as they grow older and does not require treatment. In fact, this is wrong. Long-term enuresis has serious harm to children's physical and mental health. Children with enuresis have weak constitutions, are prone to catching colds, and are often picky eaters and have anorexia. Because people often lie in damp bedding, they are prone to skin diseases and allergies, and are easily susceptible to colds and abdominal pain. The supply and absorption of intestinal nutrients are affected.

Children with enuresis often have a sense of inferiority and psychological burden. They are unwilling to let others know, do not like to have much contact with other children, are unwilling to participate in group activities, and dare not sleep in dormitory. Over time, they gradually develop into timid, lonely, introverted and overly sensitive characters. According to surveys, the intellectual development of children with long-term enuresis will be affected to a certain extent, and their IQ will be 17% to 23% lower than that of normal children.

2. What factors are related to enuresis?

The causes of enuresis in children are rather complex and may be related to the following factors.

1. Genetic factors

If both parents had enuresis as children, the incidence of enuresis in their children is 77%; if one of the parents had enuresis as children, the incidence of enuresis in their children is 44%; if neither parent has a history of enuresis, the incidence of enuresis in their children is 15%.

2. Physiological factors

Many children with enuresis have bladder dysfunction, and their bladder capacity is often more than 30% less than normal. The secreted antidiuretic hormone is not mature enough to control nighttime urination. Some children suffer from enuresis because they are too tired from playing during the day, are stressed from studying, or go to bed too late, which results in a deep sleep and making them difficult to wake up. The brain cannot accept the bladder's awakening of the urge to urinate, and this causes enuresis.

3. Psychological factors

If a child is under too much psychological pressure, is frightened, taking an exam, etc., or if a relative is injured or killed, there is family discord, or the parents are divorced, etc., it may lead to enuresis. If a child is scolded, beaten or reprimanded by his parents as soon as he wets the bed, it will cause a psychological burden and make the bedwetting problem persist for a long time.

4. Disease factors

People with phimosis, prepuce too long, urinary tract infection, vulvitis, congenital urethral malformation and renal damage are prone to enuresis. In addition, spina bifida, parasitic diseases, diabetes, diabetes insipidus, epilepsy, etc. are also related to enuresis.

5. Improper training

Improper training of waking children up at night to urinate can also easily cause enuresis. If the frequency is too high, the bladder may lose its effective stimulation response; if the frequency is too low, the child may easily lose the habit of getting up to urinate; if the training starts too early, such as when the baby is a few months old, bedwetting may occur instead because the cognitive and language comprehension abilities are not yet mature; if the training is forced, no matter how the baby struggles or cries, or whether he has urine or not, the baby may develop a fear of urination and cause enuresis.
