Newborn baby twists and turns while sleeping

Some parents will find that their babies keep twisting and turning when they sleep, and always make humming sounds, so they think that the baby is uncomfortable or has a nightmare. In fact, it is normal for babies to twist while sleeping. After careful observation, you will find that adults also turn over and move while sleeping. This is a normal phenomenon of sleep. Let’s take a detailed look at it.

1 It is normal for babies to hum and twist while sleeping

The baby always wakes up during sleep at night, or hums a few times, and often tosses and turns in bed. In fact, this is the human sleeping pattern. Even adults will toss and turn in their sleep. This is because human sleep has two basic forms: REM sleep and non-REM sleep. The two sleep forms alternate many times, making our nighttime sleep up and down like waves. In non-REM sleep, your breathing is steady, your heartbeat is even, your brain is in a "resting" state, and you may snore sometimes. At this time, even a ringing phone can hardly wake you up. After about two or three hours, you enter REM sleep. At this time, you can see your eyeballs moving rapidly under your closed eyelids, your heartbeat speeds up, your breathing becomes uneven, and you may make various noises: moaning, humming, sniffling, and whimpering. Children's sleep also follows this rule. However, they have more REM sleep than adults. REM sleep accounts for 1/2 of the total sleep time for newborns, 1/3 at 3 years old, and 1/4 for adults. Some studies believe that children's brains develop and mature through rapid eye movement sleep. So, when babies hum in the middle of the night, they are helping their brains develop.

2 If the baby turns over frequently when sleeping, it is related to the state before sleeping.

If your baby turns over very frequently in the middle of the night, there may be other reasons causing him to feel uncomfortable or sleep poorly, such as an uncomfortable mattress or too thick quilt, uncomfortable clothes when sleeping, or eating too much before going to bed. However, sometimes babies turn over frequently when sleeping because of the lack of trace elements. The decrease in blood calcium causes the brain and autonomic nerve excitability to increase, resulting in the baby's restless sleep at night. Calcium and vitamin D supplementation is needed

3 How should mothers deal with babies humming and twisting while sleeping?

Mothers don't have to respond quickly to their baby's movements every time, they just need to respond to him when he really needs it. The best way is: when the baby moves, you should calm down and listen to what sounds are made during sleep, and what sounds indicate that the baby has woken up and needs you. If the baby just rolls over or hums for a while but does not wake up, just put your hand gently on him; if he still can't calm down, you can gently stroke or pat him; if he wakes up, you can pick him up and rock him, and put him in the crib when he is drowsy but not completely asleep; if he wakes up again, repeat this action two or three times, and he may fall asleep. Warm reminder: Don’t pick up your baby and pat him or feed him immediately. This will actually wake him up. If this becomes a habit, you may need to help him fall asleep again in the same way every time in the future, which is not good for both the baby and the mother.
