Is it harmful for children to wash their noses?

Children's health is the biggest concern of parents. Rhinitis is a disease that often occurs in children. Therefore, parents need to pay attention to preventing children from developing rhinitis during their colds. Children's noses are very sensitive, and once symptoms of constant sneezing occur, they need to be observed and prevented. Because if children suffer from rhinitis, the treatment is complicated. Rhinitis can be relieved by washing the nose, but is it harmful for children to wash their nose?

In addition to smelling and breathing, the nose also has protective functions such as moisturizing, warming and dust removal. This is thanks to a "mucus-ciliary defense system" in the nose.

Can wash away the damage caused by smog

Harmful substances in haze, such as dust, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, organic hydrocarbon particles, as well as bacteria, viruses, and allergens in the air on haze days will attach to the pollutant particles and affect the movement of cilia after being inhaled into the nasal cavity, causing the "mucus-ciliary defense system" to overload. Therefore, haze not only causes nasal inflammation, but also causes recurrence of bronchitis, asthma or pneumonia, or aggravates chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, cor pulmonale).

Therefore, when you come home from outside on a day with severe smog, in addition to washing your face, you should also wash your overloaded nose. Restoring the nose to its optimal defensive state and reducing the time that harmful substances stay in the nasal cavity can not only prevent diseases but also cure them.

Preventing influenza

Cold and flu viruses first enter the body through the nose. The virus can remain latent in nasal secretions for 1-4 days. Therefore, in order to control the infection and spread of the virus among the population, the virus in the nasal cavity should be cleared in a timely manner on a daily basis. Nasal irrigation can help fight off colds and flu by clearing viruses from your nasal passages.

Children under 6 years old should not wash their nose

Washing your nose is just like washing your hands. If your hands are clean, of course you don’t need to wash them, but when your hands are easily dirty, you should wash your hands frequently. Similarly, washing your nose can help your health when your nose is uncomfortable or when it is cold season or the air is polluted.

Nasal irrigation is more suitable for patients with all types of rhinitis. However, nasal washing is not suitable for children under 6 years old because they cannot cooperate well and their sinuses and ears are not fully developed. Nasal washing can easily increase the risk of sinusitis and otitis media. However, some commercialized physiological seawater sprays can also achieve the same effect.
