What to do if your child has acute sinusitis

Sinusitis is a disease with a high prevalence and affects a wide range of people. It occurs not only in adults but also in children. The causes are different among different groups of people. There are many types of sinusitis, including acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis. What should we do if children have acute sinusitis? Children’s health is an issue of great concern in today’s society. We need to study children's diseases in detail.

The Western medicine treatment of acute purulent sinusitis in children is basically the same as that of acute purulent sinusitis in adults, and also emphasizes complete cure to avoid prolonged course of the disease and the occurrence of chronic sinusitis.

1. Anti-inflammatory treatment: Penicillins and cephalosporins are commonly used. Children should be given intramuscular or intravenous administration. Older children can also be given orally, or combined with oral treatment of co-trimoxazole for a few days (double the first dose).

2. Symptomatic treatment: mainly for accompanying symptoms such as fever and headache, using antipyretic analgesics such as aminopyrine (intravenous drip or intramuscular injection), paracetamol, aspirin, etc.

3. Local treatment: mainly nasal drops. There are two types of drugs:

(1) Decongestant nasal drops: Commonly used drugs are 0.5% to 1% ephedrine nasal drops, Notone (xylometazoline spray), Dafenlin (oxymetazoline hydrochloride spray), and children over 3 years old can also use Biyanjing (naphthozoline hydrochloride nasal drops). The purpose of use is to reduce the congestion and edema of the nasal mucosa, thereby making the nasal cavity and sinus openings unobstructed, facilitating the drainage of purulent secretions, reducing or eliminating headache and nasal congestion symptoms, and promoting improvement of the condition.

(2) Anti-inflammatory nasal drops: Commonly used drugs include 1% streptomycin nasal drops, furazolidone solution (a combination of furacilin and ephedrine. When using this drug, there is no need to use decongestant nasal drops), other anti-inflammatory nasal drops, or Chinese herbal anti-inflammatory eye drops and nasal drops (the preparations of each hospital are mostly different). It is mainly used to eliminate inflammation in the nasal cavity and helps to eliminate inflammation in the sinuses. It also has a certain anti-inflammatory effect on inflammation in the nasopharynx and pharynx.

Anti-inflammatory nasal drops are generally prepared by each hospital (hospital-made medicine). Pharmacies have nasal drops made from Chinese herbal medicine (marked to treat sinusitis) which can be used as a substitute. If the drug contains ephedrine, after one week of use, if it needs to be continued, it should be used for three days and stopped for three days. It should not be used continuously every day to avoid the formation of drug-induced rhinitis.
