What causes knee pain in children?

Children are a relatively special group because their physical fitness in all aspects of their body has not yet matured, so their resistance and immunity are relatively poor, so they are also prone to some diseases. If your child says that his knee hurts, you must pay attention to it to avoid it being caused by some disease. So what are the reasons for children's knee pain? Let’s take a look at it together.

Children will experience pain in both knees during their growth, which is a problem for many children and a concern for many parents. So what is the cause of knee pain in children?

According to our clinical experience, there are indeed some children between the ages of 3 and 10, or even older, who often complain of leg pain, which mostly occurs at night, mostly in the knee joints, and sometimes in the hip or ankle joints; it can be unilateral or bilateral at the same time. The main symptom during an attack is pain, mostly soreness, but there is no redness or swelling in the joints at the attack site. The pain often lasts for a period of time and then disappears automatically. After disappearing, it does not affect walking and playing. The intervals between attacks can be long or short, ranging from a few days to a few months.

The reason for this phenomenon is currently unknown. Most of them are related to excessive daytime activity, while others believe that it is a normal phenomenon in the development of the nervous system. Because it has no adverse effect on the child's development, this phenomenon that occurs during the growth process is called "growing pains." You can supplement a little vitamin C appropriately, and no special treatment is necessary.

As a parent, when your child tells you that he or she has pain in both knees, it is important to promptly check the location of the pain and whether it is accompanied by fever, swelling, etc. If not, you can comfort the child and try to divert his or her attention, such as telling stories, watching TV, listening to music, etc., which can often make the child's symptoms disappear. If there are indeed redness, swelling and other symptoms, or the frequency of attacks increases, the symptoms become more severe, especially when walking is affected, then you should take your child to a specialist hospital for examination in time.

Growing pains, as the name suggests, are pains that accompany the growth process of children. They mainly manifest as limb pain, especially lower limb pain around the knee joint. It is a benign and self-limiting disease. The typical characteristics of growing pains are: pain occurs at night, and many children wake up in pain at night and even cry in pain. It can occur in all four limbs, but most of them occur in the joints of the lower limbs, especially above the joints. Although parents often complain of knee pain, it is actually muscle pain. There is no change in the joint cavity, and there are no symptoms such as redness, swelling, heat, pain, and limited movement of the joints. The pain occurs intermittently at irregular intervals, with pain-free intervals lasting for days, weeks or even months, after which the pain gradually disappears. The first peak of growing pains is between 3 and 5 years old, and the second peak is between 8 and 12 years old. A small number of cases present with "familial growing pains", meaning that one of the parents or grandparents also had a similar condition during childhood.

There are many reasons for children's knee pain. Sometimes it is due to excessive movement. Of course, other reasons are not ruled out. Children of a few years old do not have good expressive ability. Therefore, as parents, we must always pay attention to our children's physical changes. If any abnormal situation occurs, we must send them to a regular hospital for treatment in time.
