How to Identify Depression in Teens

Depression is a common problem in the human body, and it is very likely to occur in teenagers. Most of the causes are due to great study pressure. When teenagers suffer from depression, the impact on them is very great. Parents need to be able to detect the symptoms and treat them in time. So the following is a detailed introduction on how to determine whether teenagers are suffering from depression.

Teenagers are prone to depression, which is mostly caused by excessive study pressure. The incidence rate among adolescents is high, and the symptoms are diverse and complex.

Symptoms of depression in teenagers:

1. It seems like an illness but it is not. Patients are generally younger and will not express emotional problems, only some physical discomfort. For example, some children often support their heads with their hands, saying they have headaches and dizziness; some cover their chests with their hands, saying they have difficulty breathing; some say there seems to be something in their throats that affects their swallowing. Their "illness" seems to be very serious, chronic, or recurring, but after many medical examinations, no problems were found, and after taking many medicines, the "illness" still shows no signs of improvement.

2. There is no joy in a smooth road. When faced with goals achieved, ideals realized, and a smooth road ahead, patients do not feel joy, but instead feel sadness and pain. If you are admitted to a prestigious university but are worried and depressed, you may want to give up. Some students often run home for no reason during their university studies, wanting to take a leave of absence or drop out of school.

3. Rebellion against parents. The patient obeyed his parents' discipline in childhood, but when he reached adolescence or entered society, he not only stopped communicating with his parents, but also opposed his parents in every way. Generally, they do not tidy up their rooms, throw clothes around, wash their faces slowly, comb their hair slowly, eat slowly, and do not complete their homework. More serious manifestations include skipping school, staying out all night, running away from home, bringing up old issues with parents (the harsh education received in childhood, the impact of parents' divorce and remarriage on oneself, etc.), and wanting to break off all ties with parents.

4. Suicidal behavior. Severely ill patients use various methods to commit suicide. For those who have failed to commit suicide, if only their lives are saved but they are not given anti-depressant treatment (including psychotherapy), the patients will still commit suicide again. Because this type of suicide involves psychological, pathological and biochemical factors, the patient does not want to die willingly, but is controlled by the disease and has no control over his or her own fate.

5. Bad suggestions. It mainly manifests itself in two aspects: one is the subconscious level, which will lead to physiological disorders. For example, when the patient arrives at the school gate, classroom or workplace, he or she feels dizzy, nauseous, abdominal pain, limb weakness, etc. But when he or she leaves this specific environment and returns home, everything returns to normal. The other is at the conscious level, which focuses on making negative guesses. For example, the patient thinks that his test scores are not ideal; he does not know how to interact with others; he thinks that some of his actions are wrong, or even sins, and that they have caused trouble to others; he thinks that his illness may be a "mental illness", and what to do if it is really a "mental illness", etc.
