A Basic Guide to Formula Feeding Newborns

A Basic Guide to Formula Feeding Newborns

In our lives, many mothers' breast milk is not particularly sufficient, so most mothers will choose to give their babies some milk powder. For babies, there are different milk powders at different growth stages. In fact, there is a lot of knowledge about baby milk powder, and the water temperature for making milk powder also has certain requirements. So how is the newborn milk powder formulated?

1. The amount of milk powder feeding for newborns

1. 3 days after delivery

In the first three days after delivery, there is only a small amount of colostrum. If the mother has no breast milk for the time being or the amount is indeed too little to meet the baby's needs, she can only feed the baby formula milk with a small cup or spoon after sucking breast milk.

The digestive function of a newborn baby is very weak and cannot digest whole milk. Usually, they are fed 1/3 of the milk (with 2 times more water) in the first 3 days, and 1/2 of the milk (with 1 times more water) in the next 4 days. The stomach capacity of a newborn baby is also small, and they can drink a maximum of 30-60 ml per meal in the first week. They are fed about every 2 hours, and 10-12 times a day and night (feed on demand in the first 3 months, and the amount of milk, interval time and frequency depend on the individual needs of the baby). Frequent breastfeeding is a good way to increase milk production. Once the amount of breast milk is sufficient, you can switch to exclusive breastfeeding.

2.15 days to full moon

From 15 days to one month old, if the digestion is normal, the baby can eat pure milk, nearly 100-150 ml per kilogram of body weight, and about 60-100 ml per meal.

3. From the full moon to two months

From one month to two months after the baby is born, the amount of milk should be gradually increased according to the baby's weight. The baby should be fed 6 to 7 times a day, with an interval of 3.5 to 4 hours between each feeding. Each feeding should be about 80 to 120 ml. You can take up to 150 ml. From two to three months old, feed 5 to 6 times a day, once every four hours, with 150 to 200 ml of milk each time.

4. Three to six months

From three to six months, feed five times a day, once every four hours. The amount of milk per feeding is: 150-200 ml for three to five months, 200-250 ml for five to six months. The total amount of milk intake should be controlled, not exceeding 1000 ml per day, and the amount of milk per feeding should not exceed 250 ml. Start feeding complementary foods before breastfeeding at four months.

5. Six to nine months

From six to nine months, feed the baby every four hours, 200-250 ml each time. Change from four meals of milk to three meals a day, and gradually add complementary foods starting from replacing half a meal to one meal of milk.

6. Nine to twelve months

From nine to twelve months, the baby should eat two meals of milk per day, 250 ml each time, and still eat once every four hours. The other meals should be all complementary food. Feed water between every two feedings.

2. Newborn feeding time

1. Newborns

The feeding time for newborns is very important. Grasp the feeding time of newborn baby's formula milk, the time interval between each feeding should not be too long or too short.

Most hospitals also recommend feeding every 2 hours. Strictly speaking, if the baby is not feeling unwell, crying is a signal of hunger. It is important to feed according to your baby's response. Milk powder can easily cause internal heat and constipation in babies. It is recommended that babies drink some warm water between two meals of milk powder, with the amount of water being 1/3 of the amount of milk.
