Is ADHD hereditary?

I believe everyone is familiar with ADHD. This disease mainly occurs in children. Clinically, the full name of ADHD is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children with ADHD usually have a lot of activities and their behaviors are more impulsive. Such children are always unable to calm down and study, so they will have difficulties in learning and behavioral disorders. So is ADHD hereditary?

Is ADHD hereditary?

There is a certain genetic predisposition to ADHD. According to research, ADHD has a certain genetic tendency, and may also be caused by mild brain trauma or lack of strength elements. The main manifestations are inattention, hyperactivity, emotional instability, prone to crying, impulsiveness and a certain degree of aggressiveness. Due to inattention, there will be cognitive and learning disabilities. Treatment is mainly through medication combined with psychotherapy.

ADHD, also known as mild brain dysfunction syndrome, is mainly manifested by excessive movements, inattention, excessive talking, impulsiveness and willfulness, and varying degrees of learning difficulties. It is also impoliteness and irritability. A few patients even often lie, skip school, steal, fight, swear, etc. Their intelligence is normal or low. There are two views on the prognosis of ADHD in early studies: one is that ADHD is a self-limiting disease and the symptoms will disappear naturally after adulthood; the other is that ADHD has a poor prognosis and that adolescence and adulthood still have personality disorders, antisocial behavior, impulsiveness, willfulness, poor interpersonal relationships, etc. Research in recent years suggests that the prognosis of this disease is not optimistic, and more than half of adults still have bad behavioral problems in their later years.

ADHD is related to genetics. Several studies on family histories of STDs in the 1990s found that 30% to 40% of children with ADHD have a family member with the disease. Other familial studies have also found that there are often patients with specific dyslexia in the families of children with ADHD. The researchers discovered a gene called the dopamine receptor gene DRDC, and 40% of all people found to have this variant developed attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

Although the numbers are not absolute, for families where neither spouse has a family history of ADHD, the probability of giving birth to a child with the disorder is 2%-3%. When the families of sick children inquire about the risks of having another child, the answers they receive are based on empirical data from previous studies. Summarizing numerous studies, the risk of having another child ranges from 16% to 25%.
