How your baby's vision develops

How your baby's vision develops

Nowadays, I believe that many people have some problems with their eyes, such as myopia and hyperopia. Most people may have the illusion that newborn babies have the best vision. The answer to this question is of course no. Human vision is divided into several stages. Newborn babies are not fully developed in all aspects, and the same is true for their vision. Next, let me explain it in detail.

1. Pregnancy

The fetus's vision is formed as early as the fourth week of pregnancy. At this point, the eye is very small (smaller than a pinhead) and is covered by a layer of skin. Four or five months later, the optic nerve, blood vessels, lens and retina begin to develop. By the end of the sixth month, the fetus's eyes have developed greatly.

2. Newborns

Although the two eyeballs of a normal newborn are formed, their vision is not fully developed. It is generally estimated that the visual acuity between birth and one week old is 0.01 to 0.02, and that of a one-month-old baby is 0.05 to 0.1 (see attached table). Between birth and three months, the eyes do not fixate but are attracted to faces, bright or moving objects. So sometimes it will appear as a "squinting" appearance.

3. At 3 months old

By this time, most children's vision can "follow" moving objects smoothly and can also fix their gaze on an object. Colors and moving objects can attract young children, and these can promote the development of vision. At four months, stereoscopic vision begins to develop.

4. 3 to 6 months old

During this period, the retina is well developed. Young children can look from near to far, and from far to near, and can see the fine parts of objects clearly. Judgment of distance also begins to develop. At four months, stereoscopic vision begins to develop.

5. 6 months old

During this period, the eyes are two-thirds the size of an adult's. Objects are viewed with both eyes at the same time, thus obtaining normal "binocular vision". And the judgment of distance and depth continues to develop.

6. At one year old

By this time, the child's vision has further developed comprehensively. The coordination of eyes, hands, and body is more natural. At this time, the visual acuity is 0.1 to 0.3. The vision before the age of one is in the "plastic period". If the vision is blocked, the vision will not continue to develop and may even degenerate.

7. 2 to 4 years old

Children at this age like to look at pictures and draw. Stories with pictures can often attract children's attention. The normal vision at the age of three is 0.6 to 0.8, and the normal vision at the age of four is 0.8 to 1.0. At three years of age, the development of stereoscopic vision is almost complete.

A baby's vision may not be completely normal until the age of three, so parents should not worry too much. What you should really pay attention to is the baby's physical condition. I hope that this article I shared about the development of baby’s vision will be helpful to everyone, and I also hope that every baby can grow up healthy.
