Why is the newborn losing weight?

There are pathological and physiological reasons for weight loss in newborns. If it is physiological weight loss, there is no need to worry too much. As long as the child is fed in a timely and scientific manner, the weight will gradually return to normal. If the child's weight loss exceeds the normal level, it is pathological. At this time, you can take the child to the hospital for examination to find out the cause of the weight loss. Here are some possible reasons for weight loss in newborns.

Generally speaking, a newborn's weight will not increase but decrease within a few days to a week after birth. However, the decrease will not exceed 8% of the birth weight, and the weight will recover or even exceed the birth weight in about ten days. This phenomenon is called "temporary weight loss in the neonate", also known as "physiological weight loss." Why does a newborn lose weight? There are several physiological reasons for the baby's weight loss: after birth, the baby will urinate and expel meconium from the body. During the first few days of life, your baby will sleep more and eat less. The mother received too much fluid during the delivery process, causing the baby to lose a slight amount of weight after birth.

The baby's weight reaches its lowest point 3 to 4 days after birth and then gradually increases. During the 7th to 10th day after birth, the baby's weight will increase significantly, about 30 grams per day. By the time the baby is one month old, the weight will be 500 to 800 grams higher than at birth. There is no need to worry about physiological weight loss. As long as you breastfeed in a timely manner and provide careful care according to scientific feeding methods, your baby's weight will be restored quickly. If you find that your weight loss is beyond the normal standard, or that your weight recovery time is later than normal, you should carefully look for the reasons.

In addition to the reasons introduced above, weight loss in newborns may also be due to insufficient breast milk. At this time, new mothers can take lactation-inducing foods to increase milk secretion. If there is insufficient milk, they can use newborn milk powder to feed their children. In addition, new mothers need to feed their children on time every day and not let their children go hungry.
