What causes children to cough at night?

Although children also have a respiratory system, their respiratory system is not fully developed. If they catch a cold or are blown by a wind, the baby will have symptoms such as coughing, especially at night, which is the time period when children cough more frequently. Generally speaking, children's coughing at night is a normal protective behavior. If parents find that their baby coughs too rapidly and the situation is slightly serious, this is not the reason. What is the reason why children cough at night?

The first thing to consider when a child coughs at night is whether it is due to improper sleeping position. Because improper lying position can cause poor breathing in the lungs or bronchial tubes, which can manifest as shortness of breath, tearing, etc.

Solution: At this time, you can raise the child’s pillow. Inflammation of the throat or dryness and itching that irritates the respiratory mucosa can also cause children to cough at night.

Treatment method: In between coughing, you can let the baby change to side-lying position or hold him/her to lie on his/her side. Gently pat your baby's back to help the mucus come out. It is important to note that you should not take cough suppressants casually, as this may suppress the cough center and hinder expectoration.

Lack of indoor ventilation can also cause children to cough at night. Keeping doors and windows closed when sleeping at night can easily cause the indoor air to become turbid, causing children to cough at night.

Treatment method: Keep the indoor air circulating, not dry, and free of odor, and do not burn mosquito coils.

Because many parents are accustomed to turning on the air conditioner before going to bed, the change in indoor temperature causes children to cough at night.

Solution: It is best not to turn on the air conditioner. You can turn it on for a while before going to bed to adjust the indoor temperature, or take other methods to adjust the indoor temperature to create a comfortable sleeping environment for your baby.

If a child does not normally have a cold but still coughs frequently at night, the first thing parents should do is to eliminate the impact of the environment on the baby, such as turning off the air conditioner, closing the windows or keeping the air circulating. If these situations have no effect on the baby, then you should consider whether the baby is suffering from inflammation. Measures should be taken as soon as possible to allow the baby to spend the night peacefully.
