What to do if your child has low blood sugar

Children are more likely to get sick because of their low body resistance, so hypoglycemia is very common in children. Hypoglycemia in children is a common symptom and requires timely treatment, which is very helpful for the treatment and the health of the child. Diet is a better way to treat hypoglycemia in children. Many people don’t know much about dietary adjustments for children with hypoglycemia. To this end, let us understand what to do if children have hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia in children refers to blood sugar concentration lower than normal due to different reasons. Blood sugar drops to the lowest point 1 to 2 hours after birth and then gradually rises. Normal plasma glucose should be >2.8mmol/L (>50mg/dl) at 72 hours. Neonatal blood sugar <2.2mmol/L (<40mg/dl) is hypoglycemia. Older infants and children have fasting blood sugar <2.8mmol/L (<50mg/dl) is hypoglycemia. Active treatment should be started when the blood sugar level of a newborn is <2.24mmol/L (<40mg/dl). Hypoglycemia can cause irreversible damage to the brain and affect brain function.

It should be noted here that hypoglycemia may occur occasionally in children due to malnutrition, so they need to supplement with foods high in sugar in time. However, if the child's hypoglycemia returns to normal through dietary adjustment, normal sugar intake should be restored. This can prevent the child from experiencing various discomforts due to excessive sugar intake. In addition, children with hypoglycemia also need to actively participate in physical exercise.
