What to do if your 5-month-old child has a stuffy nose

The body resistance of a five-month-old baby is very weak, and nasal congestion is common at this time. Most of the time, nasal congestion is caused by secretions blocking the nasal cavity, and the edema of the nasal mucosa will lead to nasal congestion. Therefore, patients should pay attention to proper physical conditioning in daily life and cooperate with some methods for treatment.

When a child has a stuffy nose, the first thing to do is to distinguish whether the cause of the stuffy nose is secretion blockage or nasal mucosal edema.

If the nasal congestion is caused by blockage of secretions, for viscous secretions, you can use a cotton swab soaked in oil to smear the nasal mucosa to clean the secretions, and at the same time stimulate sneezing to expel the secretions. If the secretions are very dry, you can first drop a little sea salt water, and after the secretions soften, use the above method to clean them.

If the nasal congestion is caused by a cold or other reasons, it is mostly due to edema of the nasal mucosa. Inhaling a certain amount of water can help the secretions in the nasal cavity be discharged, effectively relieving the discomfort symptoms. Water vapor can be inhaled, for example, you can fill a basin of hot water and let your child inhale the steam, being careful not to scald the child, or use steam made in the bathroom. In addition to the heating method, physiological saline can also be made into atomized gas through a medical nebulizer inhaler. If you use a household humidifier, be careful not to allow contamination such as mold to occur when using it. In addition, you can also apply a warm, wet towel to your nose, which can also help drain nasal secretions. If the above methods are still not effective in relieving nasal congestion, you can use nasal sprays that do not contain ephedrine to relieve edema and facilitate breathing.

Regardless of the cause of nasal congestion, the nasal mucosa must be protected after initial treatment. The method to protect the nasal mucosa is very simple. You can dip a thin cotton swab in olive oil and insert it into your nostrils before getting up early and going to bed at night. Then apply it on the nasal mucosa. This can also reduce the secretion of secretions. If you persist for several weeks to give the nasal mucosa sufficient time to recover, the problem of insular obstruction can be cured.
