Why does a child drool?

Parents all hope that their children can grow up healthily, and their children’s every move will be taken seriously by their family. Many parents of newborns lack experience in raising children. When they find that their children drool frequently, they become very worried and wonder whether this is normal. So, why do children drool? Let’s take a closer look at it below.

Drooling is an experience that almost every baby will have. Do mothers think it is normal for babies to drool?

Have you noticed that most babies drool in a certain pattern? Never underestimate your baby's saliva. Let's see what your baby's saliva is telling you.

Baby drooling is a normal physiological phenomenon

It is normal for children to drool when they are young because their chewing ability and facial muscle contraction ability are relatively weak, so their mouths can never close, which leads to drooling.

The saliva of a newborn baby is only enough to moisten the oral mucosa. The amount of saliva secretion will increase significantly when the baby is 3 months old.

When the baby is 4 to 5 months old, start adding complementary foods. As foods containing starch are gradually added to the diet, the salivary glands are stimulated by these foods and saliva secretion increases significantly. In addition, the baby's mouth is small and shallow, the swallowing reflex function is not yet perfect, and he cannot use swallowing movements to regulate saliva, so as long as there is too much saliva, it will overflow the "dike" and flow out of the mouth.

Babies aged 6 to 7 months begin to grow their first teeth. When the deciduous teeth erupt, the small teeth push outward from the gums, causing mild swelling and discomfort in the gum tissue, thereby stimulating the nerves on the gums and causing a reflex increase in the secretion of the salivary glands. At this time, seeing a baby over half a year old drooling often indicates that the baby is about to grow teeth, and the young mother should be happy.

In addition, many babies like to put their fingers, rubber nipples, etc. into their mouths and suck them, which also stimulates the secretion of the salivary glands and increases saliva.

The above is an introduction to why children drool. I hope it will be helpful to parents. It is a normal physiological phenomenon for children to drool. Don't make a fuss when it happens. The key is to take good care of your child on a daily basis. After all, saliva is acidic and may corrode the stratum corneum of the child's skin, causing inflammation and inducing eczema and other diseases.
